Wellbeing
At New Lambton Heights Infants School, student wellbeing and learning go hand in hand. We want every student to feel safe, included and ready to learn. Our wellbeing approach is proactive, inclusive and trauma-informed, so every child is supported to thrive academically, socially and emotionally.
How we support student wellbeing
Our School Behaviour Support and Management Plan (SBSMP) underpins everything we do. It is aligned with the NSW Department of Education’s Student Behaviour Policy, and it reflects our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Personal Best.
We support student wellbeing through:
- Trauma-informed practices – structured, predictable and nurturing environments that build safety and trust.
- The care continuum – proactive, early intervention, targeted and individualised supports to meet each child’s needs.
- The Second Step program – weekly lessons that explicitly teach social-emotional skills such as empathy, problem-solving and emotional regulation.
- Ready to Learn tools – personalised plans and visual scales that help students recognise and regulate their emotions.
- The Steps of Support framework – clear, consistent strategies staff use to help students reset and re-engage in learning.
- Collaboration with families and specialists – including health care plans, allied health support and open communication
Wellbeing in the classroom
Student wellbeing is embedded into daily practice. Each morning begins with routines that check in on how children are feeling and connect them with our school values. These predictable structures help students feel safe, calm and ready to learn.
Teachers integrate social-emotional learning through the Second Step program as part of the PDHPE curriculum, alongside opportunities for movement, mindfulness and reflection throughout the day.
Visual supports
To help students understand and manage their emotions, we use visuals such as:
- Ready to Learn Scale – a tool that helps students identify how they are feeling and what strategies will help them return to a calm, focused state.
- Ready to Learn Plans – co-designed with students to support individual needs.
- Steps of Support – a school-wide response to behaviour that provides clear, consistent steps for staff to follow.
These resources make wellbeing visible and practical, supporting students to build confidence, resilience and self-regulation.
